The tomato votes are in!
Several of you were lucky enough to be at Cherry Ridge for the great tomato taste-off of 2008, where we tasted the 21 different varieties of tomatoes that we grew last year.
Everyone voted - the votes have been counted. Following are the tomatoes we’ll be growing in 2009:
- Yellow Brandywine - “tomato-y perfume - small is better, not as sweet as some, non-acidic, gorgeous yellow slices”
- Red Brandywine - “Whowee! Gimme some mayo, bacon, and a pinch of salt!”
- Tigerella - “awesome tomato smell, acidic, not too sweet, beautiful color”
- San Marzano - “sauce. Without Marzano, there can be no sauce…”
- Marvel Stripe - “great appearance, awesome slicer, huge, sweet perfume, non-acid, exotic”
- Zapotec - “awesome slicer, sugary, meaty, perfumey, exotic, amazing shape”
- Moskvich - “a bit acidic, good texture, good traditional size tomato (Russian)”
- Vinson Watts - “nice slicer, not terribly prolific, good smell & appearance, very sweet, old-timey taste, good texture”
- Golden Sweet - “home run - beats Golden Rave hands down, small grape style”
- Striped German - “green, lovely, firm, acidic start/sweet aftertaste”
- Cherokee - “fab color-more bacon please! As good as Brandywine, but wins on looks, nice slicer”
- Williams Stripe - “how can we say no to a tomato with “Williams” in the name?”
- Mexican Wild - “sweetest of the grape tomatoes - very small - cut entire stalk, good for market”
