Garden weekend - update April 17-18

Weather: partly cloudy/showers both days, highs 59 degrees.
A quick update on garden progress. Thanks first off to Julia and Steve, and Scott and Carolyn (and their friend’s) visits up here. And Victoria, thanks for helping chop the raspberries.

In short - things are moving forward nicely garden-wise. What was almost a swamp - the southeast edge of our garden - has now dried up. Here’s a status report on where we are:
- garden plan finished (picture attached in case you’re curious)
- all but three seed trays planted and plants up
- raspberries trimmed down (and sprouting new growth)
- Killdeer found! Yes, we have another killdeer this year, 4th year in a row
- adirondack red potatoes ordered- rhubard crowns received, ready for planting
- snap peas, regular peas planted and sprouting- garlic, mint, oregano, chives up and growing
- greens planted (6 varieties, arugula, spicy mesclun, spicy greens, mizuna, mustard, wildfire)
- onions planted (3 varieties)

Next weekend we’ll be getting compost from the alpaca farm. Any volunteers? We could use them.
Sally and I put together the soil blocks from our custom mix of compost, topsoil, sand, and perlite. Plants coming up nicely.

Saturday we’ll be planting the last three trays, and depending on the rain today and tomorrow, possibly putting in calendula and tearing out half of the blackberries (we’re removing the “wet” portion of the blackberries that showed significant rust infection, hoping that will keep the other half from getting infected). Could use help if anyone feels like coming up, although this all depends on the rain so call us first.
Bees made it through the winter - that means honey!

Please hit me back with an e-mail about your availability. We’d like everyone to be up here at least one day during each month from here on out. We can use help every weekend from here on out. Please remember that our big planting days will be Saturday and Sunday, May 22-23 (mostly prep), and Saturday May 30th (mostly planting).
